1/2 Small White Onion 작은 양파

1 Scallion 쪽파

10 - 12 Carrot Slices 당근 조각

1 Tablespoon 큰술 Extra Virgin Olive Oil 식용유

1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Sesame Oil 참기름

1 Pinch 꼬집 Salt 소금

1 Pinch 꼬집 Black Pepper 후추

Garnishing 고명: Roasted Sesame Seeds 참깨


Non-Spicy Braising Sauce 간장 양념장

½ Cup 컵 Water 물

2 Tablespoon 큰술 Soy Sauce (All Purpose) 양조간장

1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Mirin 미림

1 Tablespoon 큰술 Brown Malt Syrup 조청물엿 (substitution: Brown Sugar 흑설탕)

1/2 Tablespoon Minced Garlic 마늘


Spicy Stir-Fried Fish Cake 매콤한 어묵볶음

170 Grams Fish Cakes 어묵

½ Small White Onion 작은 양파

1 Green Pepper 풋고추

1 Red Pepper 홍고추

1 Tablespoon 큰술 Extra Virgin Olive Oil 식용유

1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Sesame Oil 참기름

1 Pinch 꼬집 Salt 소금

1 Pinch 꼬집 Black Pepper 후추

Garnishing 고명: Roasted Sesame Seeds 참깨


Spicy Braising Sauce 매운양념장

½ Cup 컵 Water 물

2 Tablespoon 큰술 Soy Sauce (All Purpose) 양조간장

Step One

Prepping The Fish Cake

You can cut the fish cake into any size that you prefer. Go to 01:28 of the video recipe (CLICK HERE) for 2 ways of cutting the fish cake.

  • 170 Grams Fish Cake 어묵

Under running hot water, quickly rinse the cut fish cake for about 5 to 10 seconds. This flash rinsing is to remove any residues that might be on the fish cake. Gently air toss the fish cake in a strainer, and let it rest in the strainer for about 5 minutes to drain any excess water.


Step Two

Braising Sauces 양념장 만들기

Combine the following ingredients and mix well. Yes, you can make this sauce ahead of time. Just store in the fridge. (The malt syrup will melt into the sauce when we add it to the hot frying pan.)


Non-Spicy Sauce 간장 양념장

  • ½ Cup 컵 Water 물

  • 2 Tablespoon 큰술 Soy Sauce (All Purpose) 양조간장

  • 1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Mirin 미림

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Brown Malt Syrup 조청물엿 (substitution: Brown Sugar 흑설탕)

  • 1/2 Tablespoon Minced Garlic 마늘

Spicy Sauce 매운양념간장

  • ½ Cup 컵 Water 물

  • 2 Tablespoon 큰술 Soy Sauce (All Purpose) 양조간장

  • 1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Mirin 미림

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Brown Malt Syrup 조청물엿 (substitution: Brown Sugar 흑설탕)

  • 1/2 Tablespoon Minced Garlic 마늘

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 GoChuGaRu 고춧가루

  • 1 Teaspoon 작은술 GoChuJang 고추장

Step Three

Stir-Frying The Fish Cake 어묵볶음 시작

Using a non-stick frying pan, preheat on high heat for about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the following ingredients and sauté on high heat for about 1 minute.

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Extra Virgin Olive Oil 식용유

  • 1/2 Small White Onion 작은 양파 (cut into medium slices)

  • 1 Pinch 꼬집 Salt 소금

  • 1 Pinch 꼬집 Black Pepper 후추

Then add the fish cake to the pan, and stir-fry, on high heat, for about 2 minutes or until golden brown on one side of the fish cake. Make sure to constantly stir the fish cake in the pan.


Push the stir-fried fish cake and onions to one side of the frying pan. Tilt the pan slightly so the empty part of the pan is directly over the stove heat. Pour the non-spicy braising sauce to the empty part of the pan and let the sauce braise for about 30 seconds on high heat. (Make sure to scrape the syrup on the bottom of the sauce bowl.)


Lower the frying pan so it is leveled. With the stove heat remaining at high, add the following ingredients and stir-fry for 1 minute.

Non-Spicy Stir-Fried Fish Cake 맵지 않은 어묵볶음

  • 1 Scallion 쪽파 (Cut into 1 inch in length. Thick root end, cut down the middle/long way first.)

  • 10 - 12 Carrot Slices 당근 조각

Spicy Stir-Fried Fish Cake 매콤한 어묵볶음

  • 1 Green Pepper 풋고추 (remove seeds and cut into strips)

  • 1 Red Pepper 홍고추 (remove seeds and cut into strips)

By now, most of the sauce liquid should be absorbed by the fish cake. Turn the stove heat off. Add a light drizzle of the sesame oil and mix.

  • 1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Sesame Oil 참기름

Quickly transfer the stir-fried fish cake to a serving plate. Garnish with a light sprinkling of Roasted Sesame Seeds 참깨


Enjoy this dish with warm Korean rice. The stir-fried fish cake is made somewhat salty and spicy so that with warm rice, it will be perfectly balanced.


Now, stir-fried fish cake is also a great side dish to have with alcohol, especially cold beer and soju (non-flavored soju please🙏). We call side dishes/snacks served with alcohol 술안주.
