🎃 Spooky Edible Tombstones with KOREAN Choco-Pie [NO BAKE Halloween Recipe] 초코파이 할로윈 레시피

Updated: 2 days ago

Indulge in a spooky twist with a Halloween DIY recipe for no-bake treats using Korean choco pies. Transform them into tombstones for a spooky cemetery!

If you are looking for an EASY HALLOWEEN DECORATION that is EDIBLE, you came to the right place! And this Halloween treats recipe uses Korean MoonPies called Choco Pies (초코 파이). Choco Pies are ICONIC Korean dessert snack that everyone grew up with, even for Korean-Americans.

Today, we'll turn these Choco Pies into tombstones bedazzled with sparkly sprinkles and create a spooky cemetery that looks like a bloody massacre, using Oreo cookies, brownies, Pocky Sticks and more.

FYI - This is an EASY HALLOWEEN RECIPE that you can do with young children and perhaps, even with well-behaved adult-children😭

BONUS: Includes a brief parody of Korea's legendary and iconic Female Virgin Ghost: 처녀 귀신

처 (chuh) 녀 (nyeoh) = female virgin

귀 (gwhee) 신 (shin) = ghost

전설의 고향 is a TV mini-series that I grew up watching as a little kid. This show gave birth to the iconic 처녀 귀신's popularity. She wore a white hanbook (한복), with long straight black hair, very gaunt-looking (as she should since she is a ghost after all), and she was footless or legless. She floated/walked on air, with her hand stretched out forward, as if she is coming after you! The folk-tale goes that she was killed before she had a chance to get married and was so pissed (한 'han' = Beyond sorrow, pain, and anger; An emotional turmoil that is deeply ingrained in one's mental and emotional state) that she could not move on the afterlife. She hung around hiding in people's houses, inside the huge clay pots (옹기 'oongi') that is often displayed in one's front yard, and tormenting any wrongdoers/malevolent individuals at night. Sometimes 'whispering' echos to wake up those individuals in the middle of the night. Gosh, she was scarrry! But she was also a heroic figure, tormenting those malevolent characters. In hindsight, she was a "girl-power" ghost. Well, at least, this is how I remember watching this show. Yes, I was utterly terrified when she showed up on the screen, but I also loved it, even though I watched most of the show hiding behind my grandmother's back, with a blanket over my head...😭😂🤣

I could not find a link to this TV show, as it was from more than 30 years ago!

전 (jeon) 설 (seol) = legend

의 (uiy) = of

고(go) 향 (hyang) = hometown

But here is the latest South-Korean horror film called 전설의 고향/The Evil Twin

RECIPE INSTRUCTION

Cut the Choco Pies into the shape of tombstones (cut in varying sizes, and some with biased angles on the bottom, to create the look of sinking and/or tilting tombstones), as shown in the video. Save one Choco Pie for the bleeding brain cage.

Cut the Castella roll cake into a shape of a Korean burial site (approximately 6 inches long, 3 inches wide and 3 inches tall), making sure to round out the edges.

In a medium-size pot, fill with water halfway and bring to boil. Then turn the stove heat down to low-medium. Place a large mixing bowl (heat safe) on top of the pot. Pour the chocolate melts in the bowl and mix the melted chocolates. Once the melted chocolate has a smooth texture, it is ready. Reserve a small flat section of the cake to make a "cement table" that goes in front of the burial site.

Keep the melted chocolate bowl on top of the warm pot. This is to prevent the melted chocolates from hardening quickly. Now, you can start decorating the tombstones with a variety of sprinkles and edible candy bones, skulls, and eyes.

TIP: Don't overcoat the tombstones with too much chocolate. Doing so will make the sprinkles run or fall down.

Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet on a large tray. Cut off any excess parchment paper. Pour the melted chocolate on the sheet. (Save some chocolate to coat the Castella roll cake.) Using an icing smoother, evenly spread the melted chocolate on the parchment paper.

TIP: If you took a while to decorate the Choco Pie tombstones and the melted chocolate has hardened, bring the pot back to the stove and reheat/melt the chocolate.

To Create The Korean Burial Site

Add the burial shaped Castella roll cake on the back corner of the chocolate spread and place the "cement table" shaped cake in front. Pour the leftover melted chocolate on the Castella roll cake and spread evenly. Sprinkle some brown and green sprinkles on top. Sprinkle some grey sprinkles on the "cement table" shaped cake in front. Poke the zombie hands on the cake, so it looks like hands are coming out of the burial site.

To Create The Spiky Bleeding Brain Cage

Place the one uncut Choco Pie in the opposite back corner of the chocolate spread.

Place the almond crushed Pocky sticks around the perimeter of the Choco Pie. Using the red color food dye or GoChuJang, coat the cauliflower florets and gently place them inside the Pocky sticks cage. Place the candy knives, cleaver, ax, and skills in front and around the per. TIP: If the Pocky sticks fall down, use the brownie crumbles to secure the base of the sticks and melted chocolate (as the glue).

To Create The Gory Cemetary

Add the decorated tombstones on the chocolate spread. Place the ends of the Choco Pies around the perimeter of the baking tray. Evenly distribute the Oreo and brownie crumbles on the tray. Using the regular chocolate Pocky sticks, place them around the perimeter of the tray, sticking them into the Choco-Pie ends. To secure the Pocky sticks upright or at an angle, use the brownie crumbles to secure the base of the sticks. Using the decorating red gel, add some bloody look on the zombie's hands, skulls, knives, ax, cleaver, tombstones, and Pocky sticks.

TIP: Try to consume this treat within a few hours of making, as the Choco-Pies and Pocky sticks will get soft and stale.

To consume, use a butter knife to break up the hardened chocolate on the bottom.

Now your super EASY Halloween treats are ready to be devoured by both little and small people. HAPPY HAPPY SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN☠️🎃👻
